Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – During remarks at an event hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Mongolia at the City Club on Friday evening, former U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld reaffirmed the importance of strengthening U.S.-Mongolia ties. Speaking to a group of high ranking government officials and business leaders, Rumsfeld remarked, “Over the past two decades Mongolia has proved the value of a free political and a free economic system. It has led the way for freedom in Central Asia. I hope that the United States and Mongolia will continue to build political, military-to-military, and trade linkages in the years ahead.” He also discussed the Rumsfeld Foundation’s program that welcomes young professionals, scholars and government officials from Central Asia to Washington D.C. for six weeks.

The former defense chief spoke to a crowd of roughly 75 attendees. Among those in attendance were P. Ochirbat, former President of Mongolia, former Prime Minister S. Bayar, and Steve Potter, General Director of Wagner Asia.

Rumsfeld, who served as the both the youngest and the oldest U.S. Secretary
of Defense, is in Mongolia to thank the country for their outsized contributions to the U.S.-led Global War on Terror and to promote stronger ties between the U.S. and Mongolia, “I will always be grateful for the courage and determination the Mongolian government and people demonstrated in joining the coalitions in Iraq and Afghanistan,” Rumsfeld said.

Rumsfeld also discussed the work his foundation is doing to attract young
professionals from Mongolia to complete a work-study fellowship each semester in Washington, DC. “My wife Joyce and I feel privileged to be able to bring young leaders from Central Asia, including Mongolia, to the United States to learn and to meet their counterparts from America and from elsewhere in the region,” Rumsfeld noted.
