November Monthly Meeting "2026 - Mongolia's Next Economic Chapter"

Over the past two years, Mongolia’s economy has faced mounting challenges stemming from declining commodity prices and volatility in global markets. As Dr. Pelli notes, the nation’s heavy reliance on copper and coal exports has exposed it to cyclical risks, where optimistic budget projections based on inflated prices have led to fiscal imbalances and overspending. He underscores the need for Mongolia to diversify its revenue sources—beyond raw material exports—and broaden its economic base to ensure greater resilience and stability. Despite maintaining a stable sovereign rating outlook from international credit agencies, Mongolia continues to grapple with political uncertainty and delayed structural reforms. As the country prepares for 2026, Dr. Pelli will share ADB’s perspective on the critical reforms and policy measures needed to sustain economic growth, strengthen investor confidence, and build a more diversified and competitive economy. His insights will provide valuable guidance for businesses, policymakers, and investors navigating Mongolia’s evolving economic landscape. For 2026, the World Bank projects Mongolia's GDP growth at 5.6 percent, the EBRD estimates 5.5 percent, the Asian Development Bank forecasts 5.7 percent, the latter due to weaker exports and the lingering effects of high inflation. Ongoing cooperation among the government, development allies, and the private sector will be essential for fostering stability, confidence, and sustained prosperity. [...]
