2023 has been an interesting year, witnessing continued and emerging additional global geopolitical challenges. There have been some improvements in the country’s macroeconomic indicators, including increased economic growth, recovering currency reserves, the full reopening of the economy, growing commodity exports, and the OyuTolgoi underground mine’s commencement of production. With continued strong support from its members, AmCham Mongolia is positioned as a leading business platform advocating for an enabling business environment and promoting Mongolia as a place for investment and trade with third neighbors. The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Mongolia successfully organized the 7th annual U.S. Doorknock to Washington, D.C., from June 7-9, 2023. Since 2014, AmCham Mongolia has hosted an annual U.S. Trade Mission (Doorknock) to foster trade ties between Mongolia and the United States. During AmCham Mongolia's annual Doorknock, business executives from the organization's membership and the country's larger business community can interact with a variety of influential Washington, D.C. policymakers and promote Mongolia as a potential location for American investment. The Doorknock visit effectively gives participants a more realistic understanding of the business climate in Mongolia and gives them the chance to have conversations about larger-scale cooperation. This year's Doorknock delegation featured 15 top executives from American, foreign, and Mongolian companies such as MIK, Sendly NBFI JSC, Faro Foundation, ONDO, Trade and Development Bank, Capitron Bank, Altai Holding, Melville & Erdenedalai LLP, and Seruun Group. The trade mission was led by the US Ambassador to Mongolia, Richard Buangan, and the leadership of AmCham Mongolia. Housing, fintech, legal, trade, banking, and financial services, as well as telecommunications, digital transformation, and HVAC service providers, were non-mining sectors represented in this year's Doorknock diverse delegation, which US stakeholders appreciated in terms of Mongolia's economic diversification. 2022 has been mixed for the business environment, with recovery witnessed in some sectors, but the border bottleneck and Zero-Covid policy in China and emerging geopolitical challenges have brought additional issues to the country. Mongolia is facing shrinking foreign exchange reserves, a skyrocketing inflation rate, and limited foreign investments. Nevertheless, with the reopening of the economy in the Post-Covid19 context, AmCham Mongolia rolled out full-scale activities, organizing numerous events, vigorously engaging with stakeholders, undertaking focused policy advocacy efforts, representing the interests of members, and advocating for the organization’s values: promotion of a private sectorled economy, the free market, and free enterprise in Mongolia. A couple of highlights of our innovative initiatives include: organizing the first-ever in-country Doorknock, engaging with government stakeholders and presenting the Three Pillars for Positive Change policy statement; hosting ICT Week, bringing global digital businesses to the country; undertaking a popular tree planting corporate social responsibility initiative with the participation of around 100 volunteers; and up-scaling AmCham’s communications strategy and media exposure. The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Mongolia successfully organized its fifth annual U.S. Trade Mission to Washington, D.C., from July 15-19, 2018. AmCham members BTF, Ta Chi Mart and Woodmont International joined AmCham's Executive Director and Director of Policy and Advocacy. The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Mongolia successfully organized its fourth annual U.S. Trade Mission to Washington, D.C., from June 12-14, 2017, under the leadership of the Honorable Jennifer Zimdahl Galt, United States Ambassador to Mongolia. The Trade Mission, AmCham's largest yet, was also attended by senior Mongolian government representatives, including Minister for Foreign Affairs of Mongolia His Excellency Ts.
